How do I hate thee? Let me count the ways…
If you have the attention span of a gnat with down’s syndrome, don’t bother reading this.
In the wake of Hulkageddon, I am left with an amused smirk on my face, and with a newfound dislike for humanity at large. Now, let’s not pretend I like the human race prior of course, I’m too old and too smart to fall for the “people are nice” scam. People aren’t nice, but there is different kinds of being not nice, it’s a gradient of of not-niceness that goes all the way from people who are scum but manage to pretend they are not completely self-absorbed assholes, to people who are just visibly, audibly and tangibly not nice people.
I don’t like people very much. This is not the reason I am a pirate in EVE however.
EVE to me is an amusing past time, it’s a game, it’s a pastime that offers a diversion from the rat race of day to day life.
What it is not is a virtual life to be lived in the mind-crushing blandness that pervades your every other waking moment.
Let us observe the carebear, we all see the carebear almost every time we log into EVE, but we never consider the carebear. The carebear does not play the game I do, the carebear is repeating the motions of his mundane life, in the far-flung space future of New Eden. He is diligent, he is productive, he is fucking boring as shit.
I hate the carebear.
I mean I really, really hate the carebear. But that is not why I created Hulkageddon.
The amazing thing is, I socialize with various “scumbags” in EVE on a daily basis, they are by and large;- Funny, sociable, entertaining, inventive and Frightfully intelligence. If you pull one over on one of them they will call you a dick and it’s all good.
If you screw over a carebear, you get to see the profound, deeply disturbed nature, of mental disorders. Nothing, NOTHING I have ever seen on the internet is as incredibly comedic as the ANGER of a carebear that got screwed somehow. You will never see full-blown, foaming at the mouth anger, like that of the carebear.
And I hate them for it, I hate how they are too fucking stupid too fucking conditioned by their spineless day to day lives to accept any responsibility for anything that happens to them. It’s part of the New American Way.

And Bad People like me, we can smell you. You smell like food. And we know you will not fight back, because you are too goddamned lazy to even CONSIDER it. And that is why you will always be a victim.

And when we get the carebear, you get to watch his rising anger. Deep inside he is mad at himself, because in there somewhere, below a pile of dollar-bills, half digested tasteless TV dinners is the vestigal remnants of a human soul, trying so hard to change things. And then a glass of pepsi drowns out the noise.

And with that, I’ve just been wished to death for the 436th time by someone who is angry with themselves but cannot admit it. And I’m the psycho.
After a while of course, you get used to that, the initial shock and disbelief at such incredible stupidity gives way to interest. Anyone that knows me will attest, I am an insatiably curious person. I NEED to KNOW shit.
It’s not an optional thing, I will sit through fucking horrible movies JUST BECAUSE I NEED TO KNOW. I will play terrible video games to see the ending. I voluntarily read the fucking Illiad.
And it is with this same interest, the same motivation of the child pulling the wings off the fly, that I pick at the psychology of the carebear. I don’t understand these people, I can’t understand why someone would mine all day, I need to know.
So I do horrible, immoral, evil shit to them just to hear the sound of their squeeling. I do comparative analysis of what kind of mocking or activity makes them the maddest, I want to see what name to call their mother in reply to their hatemail to get the best rage-filled rant in my mailbox. It’s a smorgasbord, a cornucopia, of diseased minds out there, ripe for the poking.
Of course what I’m doing is not really evil or immoral, from where I sit, it’s still pixels on a screen. They have no value past the value people assign to it. But the game has changed, there are now pieces on the board, they make sound if you squeeze them, and the sound is different every time.
It’s like an 80-90′s boardgame with a giant plastic tiki-god with a voice chip that says something in a grainy voice every time you push the button! It’s glorious, it’s fantastic, it’s a look into what happens when you make a human mind do the same thing it does every day, that is to say, perform a boring repetitive job, and you obstruct it, and there is no normal social inhibition to stop the mind from showing it’s REAL response.
During the run-up to HAGII I received a comment on the blog, it compared me to various historical figures, each responsible for countless atrocities. That in itself is kind of flattering, though I’m afraid I must admit I do not yet have the resources to round up and gas a random ethnic group purely for my own amusement. We’re working on it.
No, the stunning thing here, is that I was compared to Adolph Hitler AND Joseph Stalin at the SAME TIME.
The more astute and historically inclined amongst you will see why this juxtaposition is incredibly funny.
For the more stupid and uneducated amongst you (I hate you), that is like saying I am like an apple and an orange at the same time. They are both Fruit, but VERY DIFFERENT kinds of fruit.
Moreover, they are mutually exclusive kinds of fruit. If it’s an apple. it can’t be an orange.
And that, my friends, is what actually made me mad about EVE for the very first time.
If you are too fucking retarded, not to realize, the two simple facts that:
- Ganking in a video game IS NOT EQUAL to the genocide of 6 million jews.
- Hitler and Stalin ARE NOT compatible with eachother in any way or form.
Then I hate your guts, and you should be fucking reading a book instead of destroying your remaining braincells staring at a mining laser or Worlds Collide 4.
WHAT THE CHRIST MAN? Life is too short to waste it like that, have some fucking fun, don’t play a game to perform a task more boring than flipping burgers, a task so SHITTY most people aren’t even at the keyboard to perform it!?
But if you say that, what happens NEXT is really going to blow your mind. You see, now you have insulted “their way of life”. Way of life? YOU HAVE NO LIFE YOU DUMB COCKSUCKER.
And when you even imply, in a rational and friendly manner that maybe they could change their behaviour slightly, to improve their own chances in the game. Well… you get called hitler by angry space nuns belonging to a make-believe-unrecognized-religion, and some other WalMart employee wishes Bowel Cancer on you.

And then there is people like Zill. Zill is an old character by EVE standards, sold at least twice to new owners, hasn’t killed anything since 2005. Zill stalks me on the forum, I am his chosen nemesis, he likes to do everything he can to make it seem like I am somehow not intelligent, or socially disturbed. This, of course, coming from a person that bought a 5-year old character to sit in a newbie corp telling stories of “the old days” that he never witnessed in person.
The mind boggles.
And after that there comes the sycophants and the copycats. “Hey helicity do freightergeddon next!” “Hey Helicity do haulergeddon next!” “hey helicity to jitageddon next”.

The Denier is a person that will look at something you have achieved, and then use every broken rationale to try to prove it was not good or important. “You accomplished nothing!” “You don’t dare fight things that shoot back” “You’re too scared to live in low-sec”
Guess where I live in EVE you shitsticks.
The reason behind this is jealousy, you will find these people wherever you go in life, and so you find them in EVE. These are people who have no ideas, who cannot enjoy themselves, and they HATE anyone that accomplishes anything of note, or has a large amount of fun. They are jealous, they cannot stand someone else to receive attention. They turn green like martians and take to their keyboard, typing with furious intensity, their falsehoods and denials of who you are. Because that is what they want to do, they don’t want to deny what you DID or what you THOUGHT, they want to deny YOU. Because there is no room in their world for you, your fun, your accomplishments.
I hate people like that. They are subhuman scumsuckers, they are one of the few people I hope die before they procreate before their malodorous semen magically conceives a NEW generation of douchebag.
But, I still haven’t said why I play EVE, or why I made Hulkageddon…
Because it’s fucking fun.

The problem with many of those who are PvP-averse is the bizarre and unfounded sense of entitlement that they should be allowed to operate in unassailable safety in high sec. Where the hell does that delusion come from? Even a cursory read of forums, blogs, and ANY official description of EVE Online reveals the dark, dangerous, unpredictable nature of life in New Eden no matter where you undock. How can these individuals be so self-deceived? That in itself is telling. The cries of the carebears for CCP to "do something" to stop Hulkageddon II just cracked me up!

I was posting about this over in the comments section of Kirith's blog, and realized I probably should come over here.
I am a self professed carebear, and will honestly say when I first heard about Hulkaggeddon II I got irritated. Fortunately I very quickly realized how stupid that was and moved on to continue to play the game the way I wanted to play it, and if I got ganked, so be it. As many above have said, EVE is about PVP, whether I PVP or not.
I very much respect you for the effort you put in to organize this, and am very much saddened by the forum trolling and garbage I have seen thrown your way. While I understand what everyone above has said about "carebears", please know that not all of us are like that.
I hope you continue to enjoy EVE the way you want to enjoy it, and that this doesn't sour you on organizing things like the enjoyable event that it seems Hulkageddon II was for the participants.

The first thing that occurs to me reading this rant, it's equally "unbalanced" as the angry space nun you mention, and partakes of at least some of the "bat shit crazy" that makes Wal Mart employees wish you had bowel cancer. Sure, you're not wishing harm on the carebear, but you are going in to a mouth frothing rage telling them you hate them.
Sure, you can pass the rant off as tongue in cheek, and maybe it is, maybe the scale of your feelings isn't truly as large as portrayed here. Even if that's so however, I'm sure you believe the sentiment behind the rant. If that is indeed the case, then this boils down to you getting upset at other people because of their playstyle. You are ranting about your dislike for certain people merely because of their choice of playstyle. It's one thing to dislike their playstyle choice and the impact that style may have on your vision of the game, but it's another thing altogether to get an emotional response and direct it at the people themselves, simply because of their preferred playstyle. To me, that becomes a case of the pot calling the kettle black

Also, I have been killed by you and others in a roaming gang in lowsec. Your fleet performed admirably, and the best part was you were pretty cool during the whole thing. I didn't see any chest thumping, epeen stroking smack talk in local, and you guys even let me get out with my pod (and implants). The vast majority of people are stupid, and being American myself, I feel comfortable saying that we as a nation in general, are some of the most pampered and stupid people around.
Most Americans have grown up with either a superiority complex, or some strange idea that the everyone else in the world owes us something. However, there are exceptions to that rule. What continues to baffle me though, is that some people can get so angry and upset over a GAME they're supposed to be playing for fun.
If I ever get to the point where something in a game is enough to make me physically angry, then it's not fun anymore and I quit. Keep up the good work, and see you in lowsec!

…On the subject of American-bashing: it's not so much that as it is *America*-bashing; bashing the culture — or lack thereof — and the ways in which it makes the rest of the world go o_O
Having lived on the outside looking in, I can say that there appears to be a lot that is wrong, and now looking from the inside out, there appears to be no easy solution short of a full-on revolution… which people are too complacent to start.
The rage that poured forth over Hel's plans in a game was astonishing. I know a few groups who simply quietly kept their miners inside and ratted or ran missions for the week. But heaven forbid the rest of them allow another player's actions to change their style of gameplay. It's mind-blowing that another person might state that your style of gameplay means you must be an evil person in real life… and yet, this is what happens. When you win at chess, does the other person accuse you of a revolt and regicide? When you slap hotels on Boardwalk, do your opponents call you a filthy capitalist? NO. That is what you're supposed to do in those games, and if you remove the pretty graphics and the shiny ships, that is what Eve is, too. Pick a Chance card: 'Ganked whilst mining. Collect insurance.' Woohoo! Roll again!
Suggesting that it's silly to get upset because you lost something doesn't mean that it's dumb to get upset about it. How many of us have pounded the arms of our chairs in frustration because Mario keeps missing the jump? It's frustration at failing a challenge, not at losing pixels. But some people do take their pixels too seriously :p

Sorry, I have trouble with the bit where you claim that you're not angry, but that you FUCKING HATE some people. I'll grant the possibility that anger is the wrong word, but when you then describe someones mentality as utterly revolting, there is some sort of negative emotion swirling around there.
The problem is that you are simply projecting your preferred playstyle on to the game and getting frustrated that others don't share the same approach. It may or may not relate to their personality outside of EVE or it may instead relate to the amount of time they get to play etc. Any one of a thousand reasons someone might carebear about in EVE. And though you may hate the carebear playstyle, to tar every (most) person(s) taking part in that playstyle with the same brush, and with such strong emotion directed at the people themselves, comes across as slightly hypocritical to my eye.
You claim to be upset at the insults thrown your way regarding morality etc, but then you turn around and claim them all to be dysfunctional idiots for wanting to tread softly in a computer game. Even if they've picked the wrong game to indulge in that particular gaming style, the choice itself doesn't give you an eye in to their psyche any more than you being a ganker gives insight in to your personality. If you want to claim that their insults thrown at you are invalid and made out of ignorance, then you can't turn around and throw insults back at them based on the self same shaky reasoning…
You really, REALLY don't get it. The player doing industry, trade or what not in a smart, intelligent fashion. The player that has bothered to research what he is doing, is NOT who I am talking about here, and you are purposefully reading over that implication. There is definitely a negative emotion, it's called /disgust/ and it has nothing to do with being angry. When I say carebear, I mean the AFK miner, the AFK missioner, the clueless people that never bother to research the game or anything they do in it. THAT is who I mean, not the clever industrialist that is the backbone of EVE's economy.
With that new knowledge in mind, please try to think about what I said again, and the picture I painted will change before your very eyes.
Oh, I get that. I am the researching industrialist type myself who came late to PvP in my EVE career. For me, risk from other players was one of the biggest drawcards of EVE. Other people are the best in game AI you'll ever find. So, that being said, I never for a moment thought you were talking about me or others like me. I fully understand you're talking about those players who choose to partake in a risk free, effortless gameplay style, and seem to resent others who bring risk in to their game.
But none of that changes my point in the slightest. Those people might mis-understand EVE, and in enough numbers, they would potentially risk one of the key points of differentiation that EVE has from other MMO's. But none of that changes my point in the slightest. Risk free gameplay is a perfectly valid game choice, even if they've chosen the wrong game. Heck, I love playing The Sims as well as EVE, and it doesn't get much more risk free than that. The mere fact that I enjoy both types of gameplay in the right context is a good example of the point I'm trying to make. The lazy, mentally deficient sort of behavior and mentality that you see in EVE says nothing at all about the person. It may be an insight in to what they are, or it may be a facet of them not understanding EVE itself, and how misguided such a style is in this context, or it may be a manifestation of things going on outside of EVE that says nothing at all about the player themself and their mentality. Yet your rant targets every single player partaking in this risk free, lazy approach to gaming, and more than that, aims at the people themselves, rather than their activity.
And saying that you hate someone for their playstyle because of the mentality it represents is equally as misguided as that person saying they hate gankers because they're all sociopaths. You're just as accurate when you call them on their mentality as they are when they call you a sociopath etc
Tell the carebears to fuck off out of your game and stop spreading their softy softly approach to a game dependant on risk all you like. But don't tell the players themselves that you fucking hate them, when the window you're looking out of to judge them is so narrow

As for the US thing… Let's face it, the US is run by lobbyists lining their already well lined pockets at the expense of pretty much everyone else, it's this brutal mentality, this greed that has led to so many post WWII attrocities. It's thanks to them that we're in the mess we're in now!
There also happen to be an extraordinary number of stupid people in the US too (percentagewise as well as sheer volume).

I mean, really. I’m EVE noob but this sense of entitlement boggles me. I recently got skills to fly mining barge and retriver to actually use it. What I didn’t get is license to fall asleep at the wheel.
EVE is dangerous universe. That is right out there, in reviews, in trailers, in freaking introduction. You WILL be attacked, sooner or later. Be prepared. Crying for PVP-free zones is missing the point.
I am not seeing anyone crying a river at ridiculously low/high buy/sell orders designed to catch unawares and/or rig regional avertage, which could as well be described as market ganking.
Only two issues I see with suicide ganking are insurance payouts and using recyclable alts. First is easily corrected, don’t know how to deal with second.

In all seriousness I do Understand Hulkageddon, evern if I didn’t participate. Interesting rant … I'm a carebear and my reasoning is the exact opposite of yours… you say "EVE to me is an amusing past time, it’s a game, it’s a pastime that offers a diversion from the rat race of day to day life. What it is not is a virtual life to be lived in the mind-crushing blandness that pervades your every other waking moment." — The implication you make for yourself is that your RL is kinda boring and pirating in Eve offers you that escape from that and you can't understand why people would want to do boring carebear stuff. Your argument is based on the assumption that all the carebear's RLs are just as boring and meaningless as their eve lives; I suspect that isn't the case though.
As an example, imagine your RL is fuckin busy — imagine it involves lots of media, social gathers, parting and other exciting high-energy things. Imagine you want a break from that — what would be nicer than settling in for a few hours of listing to some tunes and tranquil mining – something simplistic, so easily contained and managed that its bloody cathartic (in I think the same way being a pirate is for you).

I recommend the Falling Sand Game. It's endlessly entertaining, and nobody's going to gank you. You can make strange and interesting shapes and fill them with sand, water, fuel, and then burn it!
You'll love it.

After reading comments, now understand what is meant by “carebear” i.e. “afk miner”. Must admit being quite new to the game I’d always taken “carebear” to mean anyone who wasn’t a pirate and that seemed like an avalanche of generalized hate and contempt. So anyhow, understand the points being made and why it gets under your skin.

I think Carebear2k has good point. The game is quite often quite opposite of what people do in real life. So staring at mining laser could be good relaxation method.
You on the other hand have good point in pointing out, that they probably picked up wrong game. Also being attached to anything in-game makes no sense. And I agree that playing anything AFK is just stupid.
And one more thing to think about. Pirates usually hate smacktalks. I love them. I found myself a gatecamp, established clone in next system and just came in and started smacktalking. I got podded but no big deal. In half a minute I was back continuing right where I ended. In 2 hours all of them just got pissed up and left. Does that mean I can think of them as stupid, hate them, etc just because they are not having fun same way I do?
Dont take me wrong. I think whatever-geddon is a good thing. Just dont blame other people if they dont share share your view of fun.

As noted above, carebear2k has a good point. people play ever for different reasons and get different kinds of fun out if it. Also, I dont personally play eve to escape real life. if you find that you do, try changing career? I dunno, just find some that makes RL fun for you

At the end of the day, I'm a carebear in eve, I play brutal pvp in other games, and overall im really happy with my gaming experiences. I wonder what it is (if the above post isnt a joke) that makes you so annoyed by carbears? surely if we're as boring and pathetic as you say we are, you should be happy that your better then us?

Myself being an industrialist with teeth (yes I pvp in null sec as well as mine and mission) have lost my fair share of ships, but after loosing my first one oh so many years ago, I have had one eye in local, and been fine ever since. Though I did loose a Mack during this event, but then made back everything I lost by all of the wonderus salvage and modules that were dropped 
even stole a few T2 ice harvesters and got a T2 ice upgrade. heheh Great Job!
