Postcard from the Dark Side

December 18th, 2009

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, while I’m not a firm believer that this is actually true, I felt that the battle we had this morning at an asteroid belt orbiting a hellish magma world that would have made satan himself proud, was worth sharing in the very least.

We arrived at this point while roaming with old-friend-turned-corp-new-guy Jaxxon commanding our little gang of mostly recons. I would have like to have taken this screenshot in my shiny purifier, but unfortunately a spurt of UNFORGIVABLE SHITTY LAG, courtesy of CCP, had cause my poor purifier to explode upon contact with the guns of another hurricane we killed a little earlier.  My only comfort is that my now-exploded expensive toy at least came first on damage on that killmail.

It’s really fun to see everyone in fancy ships these days, I remember when python was young and we could barely pilot our cruisers properly. One might argue that I still fly crummy baseline ships, but my love for the humble thrasher is just a gift that keeps on giving it seems.

On that subject, in a little while my skillset for flying the active tank cyclone (as made famous in Violatorh’s Force of Nature videos) will be complete… I guess that means I will have to splurge on a set of crystals ( and more drugs from my friend Incendiary Fairy, contact her to get your drugs delivered to your doorstep!) to make it really shine.

Here’s another picture without UI if you want to drool some more on that awesome planet and belt.

Dominion is pretty sweet.

Dominion is pretty sweet.

I must confess, the occasional lag spurt and general server wonkiness aside, for us low-sec dwellers Dominion has been a nice patch. The ever popular minmatar ships got a nice little boost with the projectile changes, the wonderful pirate faction ships as well, and the oft-empty reaches of the Empire Ghettos known as low-sec seem a lot less lonely with the added stars and beautiful planets and moons. I hear there is much upheaval and complaining down in zero zero, but that’s pretty much par for course for the blob-tastic alliance warfare business. Life continues, largely unchanged in that respect, I think more tuning is needed to accomplish the goal of moving more folks into nullsec: It seems to me that it’s far too easy for alliance to upgrade their systems without the need to really properly populate them with a “civilian population” as was the idea that CCP put forwards initially. Get to it CCP, make them NEED the carebears and the miners, make them NEED to build a population and protect it. They sat on their asses collecting free isk from ratting and moongoo for far too long as it is.

Here’s hoping that CCP will also see fit to add more content and activity beyond the mindless blobbing that is FW to low sec. It’d sure be nice if there were compelling reasons for non-pirates to visit our space, both for them to have the thrill of the risks inherent to low sec, and for us “pirates” to actually have things to prey on beyond eachother and clueless newbies that have lost their way.

FW is not that. FW is, for the most part, an exercise in giant blobs of people talentlessly overwhelming single targets by sheer numbers with nothing more than ctrl+click F1. This is rather unfortunate for pirates, since they can shoot us with impunity, but we cannot do the same because sentries will curb-stomp us. It’d really be nice if there was an actual benefit to being an outlaw… rather than just “playing eve on Hard Mode”. Yeah, I whined there, but I’m never ever going back to being a good citizen, even if it means I have to live with the reality that the deck is ALWAYS stacked against me from the outset.

Ok, you whined a tiny bit but great post and awesome pics. I agree with your assessment of low sec. Still, while it's fun to go wormhole hopping or ninja into null sec sometimes, it is always with a great sense of relief and comfort that I return to the freedom and unpredictability that is low sec.

yeah I did mention my little whine in the whine (oh my, this is getting complicated). But I remain adamant that there should be SOME kind of benefit to being an outlaw, and i'm really pretty tired of 40 man FW blobs to be honest ;)

Yeah same here re the blobs. Would be interesting if there was some kind of penalty imposed in low sec for certain fleet configurations, maybe based on numbers of specific types of ships or even numbers overall. Would be REALLY interesting if that penalty could somehow be made to diminish the capability of the ECM being employed by the blob. For example, what if ANY ship (whether in the blob fleet or not) that employs ECM against any ship which is aggressed by anyone else in a given fleet of (say) more than 8 or 10 ships got its jamming bonuses curtailed or negated altogether? That was just one idea off the top of my head, not well thought out obviously. However, if CCP is gonna buff to low sec I hope part of their strategy is to help negate blob tactics so that small fleet roaming and soloing become more viable. Of course, first you have to define "what is blob".
