Since everyone is doing it….

…just a little post about another game!

Torchlight, by runic studios, is an amazing and wonderful action RPG game that is very much a Diablo clone (indeed several of the devs were on the diablo 1 & 2 teams.) for the moment it’s sadly only single player, but for the ATTRACTIVE price of 20 dollars… well… Jut go buy it on the site i linked… You will thank me later.

New eden seems quiet.

And not just in python, it seems things are quieting down all over new Eden… Are the pilots flying home to their families for the holidays already? Are they all hooked one some new exciting games? Whatever the case may be, this is just a calm before the storm. A storm made of fecal matter, when Dominion hits.

Speculation is rife all over the blogosphere, forums and channels.

Interesting times lie ahead it seems.

While waiting for the release and the chaos of Dominion, I’m just solo roaming a bit on most days, and having a go at the trading game with my hauler alt when I’m working (goGO autopilot!).

I’m actually thinking of investing in an Orca for her, to serve the dual purpose of mega-hauler and mini-mobile-base for Helicity, since it’s ship bay can hold rigged vessels, and it has a nice corp hangar for extra  modules and such. I should be able to rapidly redeploy to whatever area I wish!

Which brings me back to my dream ship really, I’ll reiterate it here: I dreamt of a smallish cloaky hauler, like a variation of the current ones, that had a very small ship maintenance bay, possibly large enough to hold 3 frigs or maybe a cruiser or two. You could warp it to a safe, board one of the ships in the hangar from a pull-down menu, and launch it. The “mothership” would then cloak up and stay hidden till you warped back to it later.

Such a ship would be an amazingly fun addition to explorers and small raiders everywhere I think!

Only downside it that my hauler shares the same account as Heli, and is not on my second account, and I dont have a credit card to pay for moving her over… why can I not pay for this with paypal or direct debit CCP?

Also, Helicity now has her very own twitter, in case you are interested in my minute-to-minute ranting and drivel. You can find it in the sidebar on the rights (that’s this side guys —>)

A quick post on roleplaying.

Earlier today I warped into a FW complex containing an Amarr militia duo consisting of a Coercer and a Punisher. Thinking it might make for a cool fight I burned at them full speed, only for the Coercer to run away and leave the Punisher to it’s doom.

I had killed the coercer’s pilot the day before already, which is presumably why she chose the better part of valor.

A minute or two later, another amarr militia member shows up in local; I run intel on him and see he can fly a recon, the empty scanner seems to confirm this.

The coercer meanwhile had warped back to the complex accelleration gate. The trap was pretty obvious, I sprung it and quite easily avoided the pilgrim, I decided not to risk staying in to kill the coercer, despite it being half dead and warped off.

And then it happened:

EVE System > Channel changed to Tzvi Local Channel
Aldrith Shutaq > You’re quite the thorn in our side, you know.
Aldrith Shutaq > Next time you won’t be so lucky.
Helicity Boson > well
Helicity Boson > I kill more minmatar militia than you guys
Helicity Boson > give me some credit :)
Aldrith Shutaq > Go live in Auga. The Minnies will love you.
Helicity Boson > I do live 1 jump from auga :D
Helicity Boson > my hobby is popping rifters. but there were none :(
Aldrith Shutaq > Good hobby. Try to keep away from Punishers though. I hear they’re bad for your health.

I was quite amused, but also flattered, this was a real in character threat from a roleplayer! And you know what? It added to the game experience for me, for a very brief moment, I was feeling like part of a real story.

You might be wondering why I am telling you this, it’s because it set me thinking: Everybody roleplays at least to some extent.

It’s true, no matter how much many of us like to poke fun at heavy roleplayers in EVE, we all do it to a greater or lesser extent. Mostly we do not notice it because we are roleplaying only with, and for, ourselves. Think about it, how many decisions on how you actually play EVE are not actual gameplay decisions, but “in character” decisions?  Every time you pick a ship you like over a ship that is technically better, you are probably roleplaying.
Every time you do or don’t do something based on what is considered “acceptable”  rather than what is “best” within game mechanics (honoring ransoms and 1v1s, not podding an idol, or indeed in the larger sense being a pirate or being a faction warrior or a drug dealer, you get the idea) you are at least partially playing a role, often for an audience of  one, yourself.

These decisions have no inherent gameplay value, you are roleplaying.

And this is actually a big reason of why we like the game. While complex, the actual game component of EVE combat is excessively simple, and if there was not a sense of immersion in your character, you’d likely have gotten bored many months ago.

So grab the ship you want to fly, because of how it makes you feel to look at it in space or because you like it’s name, and enjoy yourself. It’s not a shame. We all do it.
