Earlier today I warped into a FW complex containing an Amarr militia duo consisting of a Coercer and a Punisher. Thinking it might make for a cool fight I burned at them full speed, only for the Coercer to run away and leave the Punisher to it’s doom.
I had killed the coercer’s pilot the day before already, which is presumably why she chose the better part of valor.
A minute or two later, another amarr militia member shows up in local; I run intel on him and see he can fly a recon, the empty scanner seems to confirm this.
The coercer meanwhile had warped back to the complex accelleration gate. The trap was pretty obvious, I sprung it and quite easily avoided the pilgrim, I decided not to risk staying in to kill the coercer, despite it being half dead and warped off.
And then it happened:
EVE System > Channel changed to Tzvi Local Channel
Aldrith Shutaq > You’re quite the thorn in our side, you know.
Aldrith Shutaq > Next time you won’t be so lucky.
Helicity Boson > well
Helicity Boson > I kill more minmatar militia than you guys
Helicity Boson > give me some credit
Aldrith Shutaq > Go live in Auga. The Minnies will love you.
Helicity Boson > I do live 1 jump from auga
Helicity Boson > my hobby is popping rifters. but there were none
Aldrith Shutaq > Good hobby. Try to keep away from Punishers though. I hear they’re bad for your health.
I was quite amused, but also flattered, this was a real in character threat from a roleplayer! And you know what? It added to the game experience for me, for a very brief moment, I was feeling like part of a real story.
You might be wondering why I am telling you this, it’s because it set me thinking: Everybody roleplays at least to some extent.
It’s true, no matter how much many of us like to poke fun at heavy roleplayers in EVE, we all do it to a greater or lesser extent. Mostly we do not notice it because we are roleplaying only with, and for, ourselves. Think about it, how many decisions on how you actually play EVE are not actual gameplay decisions, but “in character” decisions? Every time you pick a ship you like over a ship that is technically better, you are probably roleplaying.
Every time you do or don’t do something based on what is considered “acceptable” rather than what is “best” within game mechanics (honoring ransoms and 1v1s, not podding an idol, or indeed in the larger sense being a pirate or being a faction warrior or a drug dealer, you get the idea) you are at least partially playing a role, often for an audience of one, yourself.
These decisions have no inherent gameplay value, you are roleplaying.
And this is actually a big reason of why we like the game. While complex, the actual game component of EVE combat is excessively simple, and if there was not a sense of immersion in your character, you’d likely have gotten bored many months ago.
So grab the ship you want to fly, because of how it makes you feel to look at it in space or because you like it’s name, and enjoy yourself. It’s not a shame. We all do it.
