The Stupid

Just a very quick post (I don’t normally do this) to point out the most retarded forum thread related to hulkageddon I’ve ever seen.

It contains both Jacob Staffuer and Xenuria both of whom are so violently and aggressively mentally impaired it beggars belief.

we have passed the troll zone ladies and gentlemen, and entered The World of The Stupid.

Enjoy.

Edit: new link, since they nuked the thread and then apparently banned ME for being the subject of personal attacks. yes. really.

Wolves at your doorstep.

I’m pretty well known for my loud mouth and brashness, but man oh man, the way people play EVE sometimes makes it oh so difficult to keep things PG.

For example, look at the Hulkageddon leaderboard right now, go on, look. Did you see that?

That right there is 2100+ people that are (in the context of the game) quite literally too stupid to live. Hulkageddon is not new, it is in fact quite old. 4 years we’ve been doing this, months we spend broadcasting our intent on every medium that will give me the time of day.

And still there is 2100+ idiots that get their socks blown off.  How does this even happen?

The answer must lie in the nature of these players. There are various possible reasons I can think of but it boils down to one of these:

  • They are non- or antisocial players that do not participate in the community at all.
  • They live by the rule of “I’m sure it’ll only happen to the other guy”.
  • They are social but oblivious to the news.

The former two of that list qualify, in my book, in the category of “really fucking stupid” in a sandbox pvp MMO. The latter is more peculiar; EVE has a very lively blogging community a very active news site and forums that cover everything from current events to bad jokes.

You basically need to be purposefully attempting not to be up to date in order to be a victim of Hulkageddon.

This somewhat mirrors the real world of course; sticking your head in the sand is in no way new behaviour. It remains a pretty dumb thing to do however, just like in the real world , events do not care if you know they are occuring to affect you.

EVE is a game where knowledge and social behaviour trumps personal skill and in-game assets in most cases. He who has good friends has people to back him up in a fight, has people that alerts him to potential profit or danger.

Those who read the news make profits off current events, and most importantly, don’t get blown up by goonswarm in Jita like a toolbag.

Those who put in effort to learn about the game they are playing do not fit their phoenix and raven like this (though I suspect some shady isk dealings are behind this guy’s fortune).

Take myself as an example: I am not a masterful player like Garmon or Will Adama, nor am I likely to ever be able to match their vast raw talent.  But because I put forth the effort to find like-minded players, and because I read and try to learn about the virtual world around me, even a TERRIBLE pilot like myself can achieve a very decent ranking and a 30:1 kill/death ratio. EVE is a game that is played foremost with the mind, and as a distant second with your fingers.

In nature, mankind rose to prominence by developing tools, but even more so by developing it’s social nature. Having a culture, having a pack, meant being alerted to dangerous predators and to unite the strength of the individual members of the tribe. Being a solitary human meant death.

Humans have this odd habit of thinking themselves above all these natural principals, it’s a bad habit, because in EVE the wolves are always at your heels, and they don’t care if you’re in the dark woods or the middle your peasant town.

In New Eden, I am the predator.  And the non-social and uninformed are my prey, I will devour them;  Flesh, skin and tasty bones.

The Metaphysics of Destruction.

Hello my dear EVE-online players,

As you have probably noticed, I have announced Hulkageddon V, which after a delay due to real world reasons, is going to be happening at the end of the month.

With Hulkageddon invariably follow the forum threads, hateful comments and general crying. Some people do not understand why we do this, it can’t just be for lulz right?

Yes and No. The primary goal here is of course to have a good laugh (presumably at the expense of others) but it’s overshadowed by a deeper more primal need; The urge to take something and destroy it. This urge is present in everyone to some degree and it’s intensity waxes and wanes with the situation around us. And it’s reaching a fever pitch right now.

But why might that be? Well, for that I am going to borrow a page from my favorite old pen and paper RPG, mage:the ascension… (read, ruthlessly copy and paste) presented to you in the form of a letter from old H.B. herself.

From the Desk of Helicity Boson,

My dear friends and allies, I hope this message finds you well. In response to some of your queries on GalNet, I would like to share with you a teaching found in some of the mystical schools of the Khanid Kingdom.

Humans can only understand bite-sized snippets of reality. If we try to down the entire universe-cake in one sitting, it becomes too overwhelming to comprehend. We can only understand slices of reality at a time.  The most basic ingredients of these slices – the flour, egg and water of the universe if you will – are dynamism, stasis and entropy. These three forces form a metaphysical framework – the Metaphysic Trinity

Dynamism

Dynamism is the most active, changing member of the Trinity. It is movement and expansion – the ever-present need to adapt or die. Many view it as utter random chaos. Dynamism, however, is not necessarily random; it’s merely active.

Without dynamism, the universe would stagnate and die. Change is a necessary, frightening part of reality, and we are the Avatars of naked change. Through will and belief, action and reaction we push a shift away from the comfortable static base-line. With each push, whether that gentlest nudge or the most violent shove, reality changes a bit, and everything in it follows, especially the agent of that change.

Stasis

Without stasis there could be no stability in the universe. Stasis is the “egg” that binds the water and flour of dynamism and entropy. Without stasis, none of the base components of the universe would ever congeal into something larger or greater. Those of us who build, shape, craft and solidify things, both ephemeral (like corporations and alliance) and materials (like ships from minerals, empires from empty uncontrolled space) are agents of Stasis.

Conversely, too much stasis makes it more and more difficult to enact change.

As stasis takes a greater hold upon the world, reality becomes more rigid and more strictly delineated. Rules are made, dynamism and chaos are stifled and creativity withers on the vine. When a system becomes fully static, it becomes a dead system.

Entropy

This element is the end of all and the beginning of all; “From dust we are born, and to dust we return.”

Entropy is the constant pull towards dissolution, a merging of dynamism and stasis so complete that there is no difference between them. Without that contrast, all differentiation crumbles into entropy, and space and matter merge into one.

More defined in regular terms, the force of Entropy embodies the drive to dissolve systems (like economies and even people and ships) that have become too static. Dead systems cry out for those who love chaos and the dynamic to dissolve them, to return them to their original dynamic state. This closes the circle, after the system is broken down by the agents of Entropy, the Builders find themselves surrounded by chaos, fertile and ready for their caring hands to be shaped into new forms once again.

Those systems will then slowly ossify until they have outlived their purpose and must be undone once more. And so on.

This cycle is all-pervasive, even in a Space, and when we see the hyperinflation, the bored Capsuleers who dare not try anything beyond that which they always do, the endless accumulated wealth sitting in wallets and not moving one nanometer. It is then that the agents of Entropy and Dynamism arise once more to shake it all apart and restore the cycle.

That time is now.
